Condé Nast Prepares Tablet Magazines for Apple Device and Others →

Peter Kafka, from All Thing Digital:

Condé Nast says it will have a digital version of Wired magazine ready for the rumored gadget by the middle of next year and will eventually create similar versions for all of its 18 titles.

Why in the hell are you waiting for a device that you’re not even sure is going to exist, instead of doing it on the iPhone today? I mean, there are around 50 million OS X devices (iPhones + iPod touch’s) which is more the 50 times your circulation.

Like the iPhone version of GQ’s December issue, Condé says its tablet magazines will feature the same content found in the print versions, including original advertising, with the ability to view pages in their original form or in formats designed specifically for the device.

I tried the iPhone edition and it’s pretty good. Nice UI and easy to switch between magazine perspective and electronic document view. But again, you introduced GQ before Wired? It really puts the visionary heritage of the magazine to shame (it’s not even available on the Kindle).

At least I’m glad they are thinking about it, and understand that it’s not just a scanned version of the physical magazine:

They will also import multimedia content, like videos, and offer the ability to synch up with social networks and other Web sites.
